History:

Redwood National and State Parks, located in Northern California, were established in 1968 by the federal government and California State Parks. The combined park encompasses more than 133,000 acres of protected old-growth redwood forests, including the world’s largest remaining coastal redwood stands. The Redwood National and State Parks’ history begins more than 200 years ago when members of the Yurok, Karuk, and Tolowa tribes gathered to fish, hunt, and harvest natural resources, such as shellfish, berries, and the abundant redwood timber and wood products. After the Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, loggers began to harvest and export large numbers of redwoods out of the area, which caused significant damage to the forests. People began to recognize the importance of the redwood stands, their ecological value and the inherent recreation opportunities they offered. In 1907, the State of California established Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park, the first of the redwood parks and also the first state park in California. In the early 1960s, the increasing demand for the remaining redwoods resulted in outcry from the public, which formed lobbying and environmental groups to protect the redwood forests. In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson granted national park status to the existing three California state parks, creating the Redwood National Park.
