Worship Method:

The ancient Maya civilization practiced a polytheistic religion, meaning they cared for and worshiped many gods and goddesses. At Uxmal, many structures were dedicated to the gods. The “Nunnery Quadrangle” is dedicated to Chac, the god of rain. This temple complex was built in honor of him and consists of four buildings surrounding a large, open courtyard. In this courtyard, worshippers would gather to perform rituals and ceremonies including farming rituals such as planting corn and other crops that Chac ensured they would be blessed with plentiful rain during the year. The “House of the Turtles” is believed to be dedicated to the goddess Ixtultepec. The building itself is decorated with numerous turtle carvings and reliefs, so it is assumed that worshippers used this building to honor her and ask for her protection as she was associated with water and fertility. Inside the temple, offerings such as fruit and flowers were brought to Ixtultepec in hopes to be blessed with fertility and a plentiful harvest. Additionally, during the Ritual of the Turtles, which dates back to the 500s CE, priests would climb to the top of the temple and call upon the gods for fertility and success.
