The Newseum, a museum and education center on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., opened in 1997 as a museum of news and journalism. It was conceived as a “palace for news,” and its goal was to highlight the power of the press in society. The Newseum traces its roots back to the Freedom Forum, an organization founded by newspaper magnate, Gannett CEO and philanthropist Allen H. Neuharth, who wanted to honor and advance the values of free press and free speech. The forum supported a number of activities and programs, including building a museum to showcase the history of journalism. In 1997, the Freedom Forum dedicated the Newseum as a tribute to journalists and the First Amendment. Visitors to the Newseum can explore the elements of journalism, from news gathering to publishing, and learn about the freedoms of speech, press and religion guaranteed by the First Amendment. The Newseum is divided into seven sections: News History, Pulitzer Prize Photographs, First Amendment, News Corporation, International News, and Newseum Hall of Remembrance. Each section of the Newseum features interactive and multimedia exhibits, artifacts and photographs. In addition, the Newseum offers a variety of educational programs and workshops.
