Hoover Dam is an arch-gravity dam built in the 1930s on the Black Canyon of the Colorado River in Nevada and Arizona. History:

The history of the Hoover Dam dates back to the early 20th century when the United States was looking for a way to control flooding along the Colorado River. In 1922, the Secretary of the Interior authorized a survey to determine the feasibility of constructing a massive dam in the Black Canyon on the border between Nevada and Arizona. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation released a report in 1928 that identified the site for the massive dam project. On December 21, 1928, Congress passed the Boulder Canyon Project Act, authorizing the construction of the Hoover Dam by the Bureau of Reclamation. The project was named the Hoover Dam in honor of President Herbert Hoover who had supported the building of dam many years earlier. Construction of the Hoover Dam took an almost superhuman effort from its employees; over 21,000 employees of Six Companies, Inc. worked hard to build the mammoth structure. The brunt of the work, however, was performed by 3,500 hard rock miners. Working in shifts 24 hours a day, the men had to blast through solid rock in order to make way for the foundations of the dam. The dams' colossal size was enabled by a total of 4.36 million cubic yards of concrete poured between 1931 and 1935. The Hoover Dam was finally completed two full years ahead of schedule and three months under the budget in 1935. The dam was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 30, 1935. Today, the Hoover Dam is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World and the dam has become a symbol of technological advancement and ingenuity.
