The area was designated a National Monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt and was elevated to a national park by an Act of Congress and signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. For thousands of years, parts of the Grand Canyon have been a sacred landscape to many American Indian Tribes, which include the Havasupai, Hopi, Navajo, and Hualapai. Early explorers of the region, such as Juan Gallego and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, began exploring the Grand Canyon in the 1500s. In the 1800s, the Grand Canyon became a popular tourist destination. Army Major John Wesley Powell led the first scientific exploration of the Grand Canyon in 1869.
