History:

The National Mall in Washington, D.C., was originally developed as a public park starting in the early 19th century. In 1791, President George Washington signed the Residence Act, which established the District of Columbia. Following this, the area around the future National Mall was surveyed for potential building sites for the new city. President Washington chose this spot for the site of the United States Capitol Building in 1793 following Pierre L’Enfant's plan for the city. The National Mall first began to transform from a marshy wasteland to the nation’s grandest public park in 1815 when Andrew Jackson Downing proposed transforming it into a sprawling, urban park that could be enjoyed by the public. His design was influenced by several European models for public parks, most notably Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace, which was a popular attraction in London at the time. Downing’s vision of the Mall was realized little by little over the next few decades as the Army Corps of Engineers filled in the marshy areas and lined the Mall’s edge with trees. The Washington Monument was completed in 1884, and the Lincoln Memorial was completed in 1922. In the 1920s, the area was landscaped and planted with trees, shrubs, and flowers. The National Mall underwent its most extensive renovation yet in the mid-1990s, focusing on infrastructure upgrades, cultural improvement, and natural and recreational areas. The first stage of the remodel was completed in 2000, and the second phase—which included updates to the system of paved walkways and paths, benches and seating, and improved heritage and security systems—was completed in 2010.
