The National WWII Museum in Louisiana is one of the most important and influential in the United States. It was founded in 2000 and is dedicated to commemorating and educating the public about the "American Experience" during World War II. The National WWII Museum owes its origin to a local high school teacher, Stephen Ambrose, who wrote the book D-Day: June 6, 1944. Ambrose fell in love with the World War II in Louisiana after visiting the city in 1998. He was moved by the stories of World War II veterans, and was inspired to build a museum that would honor their service. Ambrose, along with other teachers, businessmen, and World War II veterans, came together to form a not-for-profit organization that would raise funds to build the museum.
