History:
The attack on Pearl Harbor is one of the defining moments of World War II. On December 7, 1941, Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack resulted in the deaths of more than 2,400 Americans and the destruction of 12 naval ships. It marked the entry of the United States into World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor began around 7:48 am when the first wave of Japanese fighter planes descended from the sky. In a two-hour period, the Japanese planes dropped bombs and torpedoes on the base, damaging or sinking numerous vessels, including eight battleships, at least three destroyers, three cruisers, and more than 180 airplanes. The attack also led to the death of more than 2,400 personnel, including 68 civilians. In the days following the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt denounced the act of aggression and called the surprise attack a “date which will live in infamy.” The next day, the United States declared war on Japan. The attack on Pearl Harbor galvanized the country in support of the war effort, and the United States began its journey to join Allied forces in the fight against the Axis Powers. The attack on Pearl Harbor remains one of the most devastating attacks ever perpetrated against the United States. In 1949, Congress designated Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, and today, Pearl Harbor serves as a reminder of the importance of national defense and the consequences of war.
