History:
The Biltmore Estate is the largest privately owned home in the United States and is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina. It has 8,000 acres of gardens, wineries, and a private village. The estate was built by George Washington Vanderbilt II beginning in 1889 as a resort retreat for him and his family. The original house was designed by renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt in the style of the Chateauxesque style of architecture, and was officially opened in 1895. The estate was meant to be self-sufficient and to have a farming focus, so the Vanderbilt family could be self-sufficient if necessary. The Estate consists of four floors and 250 rooms, and originally took six years and 1,000 people to build. It was the first building in the United States to feature central heating, running water, and electrical power. Also, it included a bowling alley, a swimming pool, an indoor squash court, a gymnasium, (the first of its kind in the United States) an indoor shooting range, and an elevator (the first in the United States in a private home). In 1914, George Vanderbilt died and his widow Edith Vanderbilt dedicated the estate as a working school, known as the Biltmore School of Practical Agriculture. The school was operational until 1917, when the United States entered World War I. Following the war, the estate was turned into a year-round resort destination and it has now become one of North Carolina’s most popular tourist attractions. Today, the estate is open to the public, and offers tours of the mansion, guided walks around the gardens and grounds, and recreational activities including horseback riding, carriage rides, mountain biking, and more. There is also a winery, private cottages, restaurants, a hotel, and a large event space. The estate also hosts festivals, concerts, and other events throughout the year.
