History:
The Cologne Cable Car (or Kölner Seilbahn), is a suspension railway located in the German city of Cologne. It is the oldest and longest aerial tramway in Germany, and opened in 1957. The 1.2 kilometer long cable car runs through the city from the Mülheim district to the Lindenthal district, with stops in between. It has transported over 79 million passengers since its opening. The Cologne Cable Car was conceived by the architect Wilhelm Adam and was built to connect the two parts of the city, which were divided by the Rhine and the Cologne-Düsseldorf railroad. Construction began in 1956 and the cable car was opened one year later, in April 1957. The cable car was welcomed by the citizens of Cologne, and remains a popular way to cross the river and enjoy the city views. Various upgrades have been made over the years to improve the services of the cable car. In 1986, a new generation of cars was introduced, capable of carrying up to 40 passengers per cabin. In 2007, a new ticketing system was installed in order to reduce lines at the stations. In 2020, the cable cars were outfitted with electrical drives, in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of their operation. The Cologne Cable Car has been recognized as an important part of the city's history and has been awarded a special historic site designation by the city of Cologne. This gives it special protection from demolition or other changes which may affect its historical value. The cable car remains a popular tourist attraction and is also a vital part of the city’s public transportation network. Visit one of the famous monuments of Germany with your friends and family.
