History:
The Ephesus Archaeological Museum of Izmir is one of the most important museums in the world, dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the ancient city of Ephesus. It was founded in 1926 under the authority of Professor Mübarek Yüzer, the director of the German Institute for Anatolian Archaeology in Ankara. Initially it was located in the city of Selçuk, not far from the ancient city itself. At that time, the museum housed collections from the Ephesus excavations, carried out by German and Austrian archaeological teams between 1895 and 1905. In the 1940s, the museum moved to its current location in the Izmir Archaeological Museum in Balçova. Here, Yüzer organized and developed what is today one of the most important archaeological museums in the world. The museum displays a wide variety of artifacts from the excavations in Ephesus, plus examples of pottery, jewelry, wall paintings and relief sculptures from other cities in Turkey. In addition to archaeological findings, the museum has a reference library filled with more than 2000 volumes dedicated to the ancient city.
