The Tarsus Grand Mosque, also known as Gül Mosque, is located in the ancient city of Tarsus, Mersin Province in Turkey. It is located near the Tarsus river and was built in 1178 in the Seljuk period (1037-1157). The mosque was built on the ruins of the church of St. Paul, which is said to have served as a place of worship for St. Paul before his conversion to Christianity. The mosque was renovated several times during the Ottoman period (1299-1922), with additions such as the minaret and mihrab (niche), and was later restored to its original form in 1998. The mosque is a popular tourist attraction and a place of pilgrimage for Christians. It is a protected historical site and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Tarsus Grand Mosque (Tarsus Ulu Camii) is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque located in Tarsus, Mersin Province, Turkey. The mosque was constructed in 1579 by Gürcü Ahmed Pasha, who had been appointed as Governor of Mersin by the Ottoman Empire in 1571. The mosque is built on a rectangular plan. The mosque's exterior is characterized by a different combination of stones and bricks that provide a rich texture to the walls. The entrance is decorated with a Baroque-style portal, as well as a mihrab and an inscription above. The interior prayer hall is square in shape, and has a dome above with skylights. The interior is decorated with traditional Iznik stone tiles, stucco plaster, and carved stone. The dome is decorated with muqarnas, and the windows are decorated with stained glass artwork.
