The Bayezid II Mosque in Amasya, Turkey was built during the late 15th century by Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II. It is a typical late Ottoman mosque, combining a traditional Ottoman architectural style with early Classical elements. The mosque is characterized by its four crescent-shaped, overhanging galleries, truncated octagonal dome, and a grand interior hall with wide arches. The mosque is constructed of dark and polished stone, with cut granite being the only exception, and is approached by an elevated platform with two staircases on either side leading to a portico. The portico is decorated with double arch relief panels, honeycomb-like stone lacework, and stone medallions. The main body of the mosque is divided into three sections; the prayer room, the entrance hall, and the mihrab (the place where the imam stands to lead prayers), which are surrounded by a cube frame. The walls of the prayer area are adorned with Ottoman inscription, Koranic verses, and miniature paintings. The mosque has a truncated octagonal dome, which rises up in stepped arcs about two-thirds of the way to the apex of the dome. The exterior of the dome is also decorated with Islamic inscriptions, latticework, and stone medallions. The minaret is situated in the northwest corner of the mosque and reaches a height of around 30 m (98 ft) in three equal tiers.
