The stadium's current name is "Olimpiada Türkmenbaşy”, as it was so named in order to commemorate the late President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov, who bore the title "Türkmenbaşy". Additionally, this stadium hosted the Turkmenistan Premier League, the country’s top-tier football league. Development The stadium was built in 1980. In 2005, the stadium was officially renamed “Türkmenbaşy Stadium” in honor of former President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov, who held the title of Türkmenbaşy. In 2017, the stadium underwent extensive renovation, modernizing it to meet the standards of international football. These renovations included the installation of artificial turf, new scoreboards, modern VIP boxes, and the installation of a new irrigation system. The cost of these renovations totalled to somewhere around $5.6 million (US). Events The Türkmenbaşy Stadium has hosted numerous nationwide and international events. In 2013, it hosted the Turkmen National Games and in 2017, it hosted the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
