History:

The history of Ashgabat Zoo began in 1959 when a lodge was opened in the center of Ashgabat. The zoo was meant to serve as a training center for students in the field of zoology, veterinary science, and animal husbandry. Over time, the number of animals kept in the lodge increased and it started to turn into an official zoo. In 1971, the Ashgabat Zoo officially opened its doors, and by 1978, it had grown to include more than 100 species of animals from all parts of the world. In the early 2000s, the Ashgabat Zoo was reorganized and modernized, and some of the species kept there were transferred to other zoos. In 2008, the zoo was completely renovated, with new amusement rides, a restaurant, and a children's playground added. Today, the Ashgabat Zoo covers an area of 24 hectares and is home to over 300 species of animals, making it one of the largest and most diverse zoos in Central Asia.
