Oued Zarga Church In Tunisia: History,Facts, & Services

Oued Zarga Church in Tunisia, also known as the Church of the Apostles, is a Catholic church built in 1755 by Spanish monk Antonio Pedro. Located in Oued Zarga, a village in the inland of Tunisia, the church is one of the few churches that remain on the African continent. It is the oldest functioning Catholic church in the region and serves as a religious and historical reminder of the influence of the Spanish presence in Tunisia for a brief period from the 1600s through the 1700s. The Church of the Apostles is known for its eighteenth-century baroque architecture, lavish décor, and the frescoes of the Three Magi, the patron saints of the Tunisian people. It was constructed in honor of the patron saints of the village, who were also its founders. The church features a number of important elements, including ornate altars, a pulpit, and a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, the patron saint of Oued Zarga. The church holds weekly mass services in French and Arabic. It also hosts the annual Procession of the Three Magi, a tradition celebrated in a procession around the village. The Church of the Apostles has been listed as a historical monument since 2010 and is occasionally opened to the public.
