It is dedicated to Saint George, and is the only place of continuous worship for the minority Catholic community in the country. The church's history goes back to the 13th century when it was first constructed by the Normans, before being renovated by the Spanish in the 19th century. The original building was constructed in 1221 by the Norman conquerors of the region, who wanted to create a house of worship for the small Catholic community in the region. In the 1260s, King Charles of Anjou hired a Tuscan-born architect named Nicolò di Giovanni di Simone to rebuild the church in the Romanesque-style of architecture.
