Ancien basilique In Tunisia: History,Facts, & Services
The Ancien basilique in Tunisia was an ancient Roman basilica built in the 2nd century, likely during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian. The original basilica is believed to have had two stories, or at least have been built in two stages. The basilica was the largest indoor public building in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, and was likely used for the administration of justice, and perhaps also for teaching and religious events. The building was used for these purposes until the 7th century when it was destroyed due to a major earthquake. Today, remains of the structure can still be seen in the form of the ruins of the columns, walls, and arches that used to line the interior of the building. In addition, visitors may be able to spot some of the geometric mosaics that once adorned the floors. Ancien basilique has been preserved as a tourist attraction and cultural landmark of the region.
