The Roman Catholic Church was first introduced to Tonga in 1847 by Marist Fathers from France. Thereafter, some Tongan islands were evangelized by the Marists while other islands were evangelized by British Catholic missionaries from the Society of Mary. It was not until after World War II that a unified Roman Catholic presence was established in Tonga, when the Catholic Missionary Society of Australia sent missionaries to the islands. In 1960 the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tonga was formed with the first Bishop being Francis Soong, who held the position until 1991. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Tonga.
