The Free Church of Tonga was founded in 1844 by a missionary, Reverend John Hunt, from England as an independent church in Nukualofa, Tonga. The Church is part of the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition and is the largest non-state denomination in Tonga. It is notable for its emphasis on traditional Tongan values and beliefs. History:

Reverend Hunt was sent to Tonga by the London Missionary Society in 1815 and found that the practices of some denominations were unfamiliar to the local population. Hunt decided to establish a new church which followed a simpler regulation and introduced a range of customs which were similar to the traditional culture of the Tongan people. The denomination was officially established in 1844 and named the Free Church of Tonga, under the patronage of Prince Tawhiao of Tonga. As with other Tongan churches, the Free Church of Tonga regards itself as an independent church that is independent of the state and is financially autonomous. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Tonga.
