Wat Arun Rajwararam Ratchaworamahawihan, better known as Wat Arun, is one of the most recognisable temples in Thailand. It is located in Bangkok on theThonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. Wat Arun is believed to be first constructed in 1768 at the command of King Taksin. During that time, the temple was named Wat Jaeng and was part of his new capital of Thonburi. Records indicate that the temple was later renovated by King Rama II in 1809 and was renamed Wat Arun Ratchaworamahawihan. The temple's main feature is its central prang (Khmer-style spire) which stands 70 metres tall and is decorated with colourful porcelain. It also contains four smaller prangs at each corner and Phra Wihan Ying (a shrine hall) which houses a statue of Buddha. Around the prangs are various statues of Thai soldiers and warriors as well as depictions of the Ramakian and other scenes from Thai mythology. In the late 19th century, several additional renovations and improvements were made to the temple by King Chulalongkorn. A library and ordination hall were added, as well as new murals and sculptures.
