The worship method of the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram is based on the Agama Shastras. The temple follows the Pancharatra Agama, also known as the Vaikhanasa Agama, which is a code of regulations and worship protocols for Vaishnavism. The temple has an elaborate daily program of worship and rituals, which starts at 4 am and goes on until 10 pm. All of the rituals are performed with great preparation and reverence. The priests bathe in the sacred wells, apply holy ash paste, perform the morning rituals, archanas, and maha-poojas as prescribed in the Agama Shastras. After performing the rituals, the priests offer puja to the presiding deity Lord Shiva in the form of Lord Ramanatha. Festivals like Maha Shivaratri, Adi Krittika, Purattasi, Ayppasi Kizhamai, Navaratri, and Karthigai Deepam are celebrated with great devotion in the temple. Special pujas and offerings are made to the deity on these occasions.
