Worship Method:

The Mangadu Kamakshi Amman Temple is one of the most famous temples dedicated to the goddess Shakti in Chennai. The worship methods of this temple follow the traditional South Indian ritualistic practices. Worshipers must arrive at the temple dressed in traditional South Indian attire. They must abstain from consuming meat or fish for three days prior to their visit and also maintain a generally vegeterian diet throughout the entire duration of their stay. Once inside the temple, devotees participate in a seven-step pooja called Saptha kavyam. This pooja includes offerings of flowers, feeder grains, and incense to the goddess and chanting prayers and mantras to the goddess. After the pooja is complete, devotees are permitted to perform special abhishekams. These abhishekams involve pouring a variety of materials over the deity's image, such as honey, curd, milk, ghee, sandal paste etc. This helps strengthen the bond between the devotee and the deity. Prasad is then distributed to the devotees with kumkam (a kind of offering). Finally, the devotees exit the temple in a procession, and a aarti is performed as a gesture of thanks to the divine power.
