French Church In Switzerland: History,Facts, & Services

The French Church in Switzerland, officially known as Église protestante française de Suisse (EPS), is an association of Protestant churches in Switzerland that serve the French-speaking population. It was founded in 1879 and is made up of 22 separate churches located throughout the country. History The idea for the establishment of a French protestant church in Switzerland dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. In 1849, the “Union des foyers protestants français” was created in Geneva in response to the need for such a church due to the influx of French-speaking refugees during the Second French Republic. Despite an initial surge of enthusiasm for the project, it eventually waned and was discontinued in 1859 due to lack of resources. In 1879, the French Reformed Church of Switzerland was established at the suggestion of two French-Swiss pastors, Albert de Pury and Victor Lullin. The first congregation was formed in Geneva in 1880, and within a year it had spread to Bern, Lausanne and Neuchâtel, as well as several other cities in German-speaking Switzerland. By 1906, the church had 21 congregations in Switzerland, representing 11,000 members.
