History:

Governor-General Baron van Lynden van Sandenburg established in 1870, on the Surinamese side of the Marowijne River, a guard station to protect Dutch citizens living in the area from maroon raids. This guard station eventually became what is known today as Lelydorp. It developed into a full-fledged town, with a very multicultural population. During the course of the twentieth century, Lelydorp saw significant growth in population and economic activity, and is today the most important town in Suriname’s eastern region.
