History:

Governor-General Baron van Lynden van Sandenburg established in 1870, on the Surinamese side of the Marowijne River, a guard station to protect Dutch citizens living in the area from maroon raids. This guard station eventually became what is known today as Lelydorp. It developed into a full-fledged town, with a very multicultural population. During the course of the twentieth century, Lelydorp saw significant growth in population and economic activity, and is today the most important town in Suriname’s eastern region. The program was designed to help former refugees gain access to housing, healthcare, education, and other essential services. 3. UKGR Lelydorp was officially launched on February 1, 2002, with the goal of helping former refugees rebuild their lives and improve their quality of life in Suriname. 4. The Dutch government invested around 8.7 million euros in the program, and it has been successful in supporting an estimated 7,000 former refugees. 5. The program includes a variety of activities such as job counseling, job-related training, business training, language courses, scholarships, and other initiatives designed to foster self-sufficiency and integration into the local community. 6. The program is managed by the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and it works in partnership with the government of Suriname, local organizations and civil society.
