History:

The Heilige Familie Kerk is an early twentieth-century Roman Catholic church located in the capital city of Paramaribo, Suriname. Built on land donated by the government of Suriname, the church was designed by Portuguese architect Tomás Miguel Gomes and is one of the most important religious buildings in the country. Construction began in 1907 and was completed in 1912. The building displays features of both Neogothic and Rococo revival architectural styles, and it contains several pieces of artwork of note, including a figure of ‘Our Lady of the Rosary’ made from wood and ivory, and painted in the style of the Jacobean period. The church also displays a painting by Dutch artist Jurriaan Andriessen, depicting the story of the family of Our Lady of Lourdes.
