Helena Christina E.B.G.S Gemeente, often referred to as the HC Gemeente or simply Gemeente Helena Christina E.B.G.S, is a small former Dutch Surinamese community located in Brokopondo District. The community is named after Helena Christina Boevé, a former mayor of Paramaribo who was an advocate for Surinamese independence. The Gemeente Helena Christina E.B.G.S is situated between two rivers and offers stunning views of the surrounding tropical Jungle. The population of the village is estimated to be around 400 people, most of which belong to the Maroon and Native Surinamese communities. The main economic activity in the community is subsistence farming, with many of the farmers on small parcels of land growing food for their families and the surrounding communities. The main crops that are grown are manioc, plantains, rice, beans and cassava. In addition to farming, the villagers also keep chickens and pigs.
