Seeing the need for spiritual assistance, the Bishop decided to establish a mission in the area. The mission in Santa Boma was established as a joint effort of the Catholic and Romano-Catholic churches. The congregation was given spiritual guidance by a Roman missionary. The mission preached Christianity and provided medical assistance and education to the indigenous inhabitants of Santa Boma. The church also provided material support to the local population in the form of food, farming tools, and building materials for their homes. Over time, the mission gained in popularity and membership, and in the early twentieth century, the Santa Boma congregation grew in size and influence. The Catholic and Romano-Catholic churches provided the funds and personnel necessary to keep it functioning. The church also provided education for the children of the local population and ran the Santa Boma hospital. In the present day, the Santa Boma congregation is a mix of Protestantism and traditional Amerindian culture. The Reverend Sanjayan is the current pastor of the Santa Boma congregation. He has been a pastor there since 2000, and the congregation is under his spiritual leadership. Under his guidance, the congregation has grown to become one of the leading Christian-Evangelical and Reformed congregations in Suriname.
