History:
St. Joseph's Cathedral Anuradhapura is the oldest Catholic Church in Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1544 by Portuguese missionary Pedro da Fonseca. Since then it has been a place of worship and spiritual learning for both Roman Catholics and local Buddhists. The present building of the cathedral was constructed in 1845 by the then archbishop Rev. Fr. Pedro Cano who was instrumental in introducing Catholic Dogma among the people of Anuradhapura. The church was designated a national monument in 1992 and has since been restored to its original style. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.

- St. Joseph's Cathedral Anuradhapura is located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka and is the oldest surviving Catholic Church in the country. - The wooden doors of the cathedral were decorated with the effigy of the saint while the pulpit was decorated with the statue of St Joseph. - The altar of the cathedral is decorated with several relics which were brought by Fr. Pedro de la Fonseca from Goa, India in 1544. - The church is surrounded by a wall which is decorated with the ancient Latin inscription “Cum Evang Litteris Divina Visitation”, meaning “With the Gospel of Salvation and Divine Visitation”. - The cathedral has served as the venue of several papal visits over the years. - The cathedral underwent extensive renovation and restoration works in 1992, making it one of the most important heritage sites in Anuradhapura.

The church also hosts various public events throughout the year such as pilgrimages, charity drives and spiritual retreats.
