The Sivan temple of Krishnapuram is one of the largest temples dedicated to Lord Sivan in the world. It is a popular pilgrimage site in Sri Lanka. The temple follows many of the practices and rituals found in Hindu temples. Worshippers enter the temple through the main entrance and perform a pradakshina (circumambulation) around the inner sanctum, where Lord Sivan is enshrined. They then proceed to offer prayers and offerings at his holy feet. Offerings to other deities installed in the main temple such as Parvati, Ganesha, Murugan and Bhairava are also made. The devotees circumambulate around the four gopurams (towers) of the temple before visiting the sanctum. Offering of flowers, saffron, coconut, incense sticks, and lamps (diyas) are made as a form of worship. Milk or water is poured onto the shivalingam with chanting of mantras. The priest or pandits are then consulted for performing pujas and homams, as per the devotees wish. Every Saturday, special services are held to commemorate Lord Sivan.
