History:
St. Mary's Cathedral was built in 1705, and then destroyed in 1658 when Portuguese forces invaded Jaffna. After its destruction, no attempts were made to rebuild the cathedral until 1876 when Fr. Pierre Appar, a French missionary priest, took the initiative and rebuilt the cathedral in its present form. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.

St. Mary's Cathedral is the largest church in Northern Sri Lanka, and has a capacity of 900 people. It also has two large bell towers and a central dome, which provides an imposing backdrop for religious ceremonies. The cathedral also contains several chapels, including the Chapel of St. Ann and the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes.

St. Mary's Cathedral provides a variety of services for the local people, including Mass every day and evening, confessions on Sundays and Saturday afternoons, and Bible study and discussion groups every week.
