History:
Koneswaram Temple, popularly known as the Dakshina Kailasam (Southern Kailasam), is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. It is believed to have been built by King Ravana during the reign of the Pandyan Dynasty who reigned over South India during the 5th century BC. It is one of the Pancha Ishwarams dedicated to Shiva and is revered as the holiest of all Shiva shrines on the island. The temple complex is associated with legends from the Hindu mythology, and is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus. In the 16th century, it was destroyed by Portuguese colonists and the stones were then used to construct the Trincomalee Fort. Later, in the 19th century, parts of the temple were restored by the British government.
