dates back to 1809, when the god Datchinamoorthi(Tirumal/Vishnu) was taken from Thirukkethesvaram temple in Trincomalee, situated in the Eastern Province. The god was taken and deposited in the King’s palace in Jaffna and was later shifted to Alaveddy in the North-Western Province of Sri Lanka in order to install it in the newly built temple. In the ancient history, the temple has been destroyed during the gruesome war that lasted almost three decades. However, after the war was over, the temple was renovated in 2018 and it provides facilities like temple lodging, accommodation, free meals and spiritual counselling to its devotees. The temple is noted for its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful landscaping. Worship Method:

Alaveddy Datchinamoorthi Temple is one of the ancient temples in Sri Lanka. Visitors to this temple are expected to adhere to the traditional worship practices that are followed here. The worshiper is expected to remove his footwear and perform Panchabhoota and Arthaa Pradesh prayers near the main Vigraha of Lord Datchinamoorthi. He is expected to complete the mantras as prescribed by the priests in order to get the blessings of the Lord. After completing the mantras, he should perform several circumambulations of the temple. He should then offer flowers, fruits, coins, and other offerings at the main Vigraha. The worshiper is then supposed to light a lamp of coconut oil and ghee, stand with folded hands in front of the Lord and offer silent prayers from the heart.
