The Veerapathirar temple at Katkovalam, Point Pedro in Sri Lanka is dedicated to the deity Murugan, the son of Shiva, and is held in reverence by the Tamil population of the region. Like other shrines of Murugan, this Veerapathirar temple follows an age-old and traditional Pooja system, with special rituals being conducted on specific days. The temple opens at 7.00 am in the morning and closes at 8.00 pm in the evening. A large crowd crowds the inner sanctum of the temple to perform special prostration to the god, offerings such as fruit, flowers, cloth, incense, oil and other items dedicated to lord Murugan. The priests of the temple perform abhisheka (showering of water) to the idol of Murugan three times a day.
