The Lord at Ellapparmaruthankulam is believed to have been installed by a powerful King named Ellalan. Currently, the popular deity at Elapparmaritankulam is Lord Vinayakar (Ganesha). There is an ancient tank (pond) near the shrine that is believed to have been surrounded by Lord Ganesha himself. The worship of Lord Ganesha at Ellapparmarutankulam involves the recitation of various mantras and stotras (hymns) from the Tamil Veda. This temple has an elaborate daily worship ritual, which starts with the worshipper entering the sanctum and performing archana (chanting of mantras and hymns).
