The first Anglican services in Pallanwatta were held in 1883, led by Reverend John Porter, a missionary who made numerous journeys to the area. The foundation stone of St. Barnabas was laid on 2 February 1884, and the parish was formed by an Order in Council dated 4 April 1884. St. Barnabas was consecrated by Bishop Leonidas Bell on 27 April 1887. In the subsequent years, the church has been refurbished and developed, with a new organ being installed and other upgrades being made.
