St. James the Apostle's Church - Madampella In Srilanka is an ancient church located in the village of Madampella in the Puttalam District of Sri Lanka. It is the oldest surviving Christian Church in Sri Lanka. The church was built in the 11th century CE probably by the Chola Dynasty. It is believed to have been constructed by King Vijayabahu I. The church is dedicated to St. James the Apostle and was originally built within the grounds of an abandoned Buddhist temple. It consists of a rectangular building with a flat roof, with a cruciform covered by a cupola. This cupola is believed to have been added at a later date. Inside the church there is a relic shrine dating back to 13th century CE. The church also hosts numerous services and celebrations throughout the year. These include major festivals such as the Birth of Christ, Easter, Christmas, All Saints’ Day and St. James feast day. The church is also renowned for its beautiful stained glass windows, which depict stories from the Bible. The church is an important site and pilgrimage destination for Christians in Sri Lanka.
