The National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen (Statens Museum for Kunst) is the national art museum of Denmark. Founded in 1809, the museum is located in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. It holds the country’s largest collection of Danish and international art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. The National Gallery of Denmark was established in 1809 following the death of King Frederick VII. The original collection was primarily made up of works from the Royal Collection which had been donated to the state by the King. This initial holding was mostly paintings and some sculpture. During the 19th century, the collection expanded to include works of art from around the world as the museum acquired new pieces from international exhibitions and private donors. In 1911, the museum moved to its current location in the Frederiksstaden district of Copenhagen, where it occupies a purpose-built building designed by Vilhelm Dahlerup. The building survives as one of the few examples of 19th-century Neoclassical Danish architecture. During the 20th century, the museum continued to expand its collections, now focusing on both Danish and international contemporary and historic art. In the 1930s, the museum began to acquire works by noted Danish artists such as Joakim Skovgaard, Vilhelm Hammershoi, C.W. Eckersberg, and later Käthe Kollwitz and Paul Smith.
