Templo Expiatorio de Nuestra Señora de Tránsito In Mexico: History,Facts, & Services
Templo Expiatorio de Nuestra Señora de Tránsito is a major Roman Catholic church located in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico. Built between 1732 and 1737, the structure serves as a symbol of the Mexican people's faith, and is famed for its richly decorated interior and extravagant architectural style. The church was dedicated to Our Lady of Transition, who was believed to be a protector against floods and other disasters. With a history spanning three centuries, the Templo Expiatorio is considered one of the most significant religious monuments in Mexico. It has also been named the “Jewel of Baroque in Mexico” for its elaborate decoration and cloisters. The history of the Templo Expiatorio began when a wooden church was built to honor Our Lady of Transition in 1685. This church was replaced by a larger structure in 1732, which included a belfry, domes, and multiple chapels. It was later expanded in 1843 with a new bell tower, and in 1867, the cloisters and circulation courtyards were added to the complex. The Templo Expiatorio remains a major national and religious landmark and continues to be a place of worship and celebration.
