The church building, constructed in 1872, is significant for its Late Victorian architectural style and its longevity as a center of Catholic worship in the village. History:

St. Anne Catholic Church was established in 1852 and was the first Catholic parish in Effingham County, Illinois and was originally called the “Main Street Church”. Father Alexander Hardey, SJ, originally founded the parish with a wooden frame building. In 1872, a new building was erected and was dedicated in grant style with Father Charles W. Doll officiating. The building has remained largely unchanged since then, with the exception of some minor renovations. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in USA.
