History:

Silkeborg Museum was founded in 1907, by Dr. Holger V. Petersen, an entrepreneur and philanthropist. He had an interest in preserving the cultural heritage of his hometown, Silkeborg in Denmark. At that time, living conditions in the area were difficult and the local government was unable to fund any museum of historical importance. It was Dr. Petersen´s ambition to keep historical records of his hometown alive, and he wanted to make sure that future generations would also be able to learn about the culture and history of the town. The first exhibition at the museum was entitled ¨Silkeborgs historie¨, and focused on the history of the city and its surroundings up to the late 19th Century. The exhibition highlighted the importance of Silkeborg´s landowning families, showing documents pertaining to historical events that had taken place in the area. The museum has since expanded with new buildings and its collection now includes more than 60,000 objects. As well as large collections of art, textiles, furniture, and coins, it holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Danish folk costumes. Silkeborg Museum has held many exhibitions over the years, showcasing many of the important events in the history of the city and the country as a whole. Notable exhibitions include one on the Nazi occupation of Denmark during World War II, one on the Danish canal system, and one on conservation and the environment.
