The Ribe Kunstmuseum (Ribe Art Museum) in Ribe, Denmark was founded in 1922 by Danish painter and sculptor Ludvig Brandstrup (1877-1955). Brandstrup had a vision to create a museum filled with the works of local and national Scandinavian artists, and also for making the place a refuge for the education of young, talented artists. Brandstrup’s shrine was realized in the form of the museum, which later become one of the biggest and most prominent museums of art in Denmark. The original building, designed by architect Johan Jacobsen, was destroyed in an extensive fire in 1970. In the wake of this disaster, the city of Ribe, along with state and private sponsors, decided to reconstruct the building, meanwhile expanding it. This new building, completed in 1978, was designed by architects Thorkild Moller and Wilhelm Scharff and combined the old style with more modern features. Today, the Ribe Kunstmuseum continues to be a major center for the exploration and exhibition of the works of both local and national Scandinavian artists.
