Pyramid of Neferirkare Kakai is the oldest known pyramid in Egypt, located in Abu Sir, just south of Cairo. It was built during the 5th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, around 2450 BC. It is believed to have been built by the pharaoh Neferirkare, who was the third pharaoh of the 5th Dynasty. Despite being the oldest pyramid in Egypt, it is one of the better preserved, featuring a surrounding chapel and a complex system of interior chambers and corridors. History The Pyramid of Neferirkare Kakai is believed to have been the first pyramid constructed during the 5th Dynasty. It was built at a time when the great pyramids and their satellite complexes had gone out of fashion, as the Old Kingdom pharaohs began to downscale their construction projects. The then-unused stone from the previous generation’s pyramids was used to construct the pyramid complex, which features seven levels of terraced steps leading up to the main burial chamber. It is believed that Neferirkare Kakai may have commissioned the project as a way to commemorate the reigning monarch of the time, Pepi II.
