History:
According to tradition, in 1535, a peasant named Josep Pou visited an abandoned chapel on a mountainside near Subirats, and found that a statue of the Virgin Mary was buried there. He took the statue to the chapel in Subirats, where it is purported to have miraculously turned into a living and breathing image – much to the surprise of the people there. Ever since, the shrine has been known as Nstra. Señora del Carmen. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Mexico.
