Architecture:

The Mosque of Sidi Mahrez is a historic mosque located in the al-Azhar district of Cairo, Egypt. It was built in 1249 AD, during the Mamluk era. The mosque was built by Sultan Muhsin ar-Rashid, and was named after a famous saint, Sheikh Mahrez bin Musa. The mosque consists of a square prayer hall, whose walls are decorated with intricate stone carving and marquetry. There are two ornate portals on the east entrance and one entrance on the west. Above the doors is a large cedar panel displaying floral designs. The walls of the prayer hall are lined with domed windows, and the ceiling is of cedar wood. A chandelier hangs from the centre of the roof, and the floor is composed of marble. The mosque's courtyard is paved with red-tinted marble, and has an ablution fountain in the middle. The mosque is surrounded by a lofty stone minaret with three balcony levels. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
