Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a unique geologic formation located in the Rio Puerco valley of the Jemez Mountains in the high desert of northern New Mexico, about 40 miles southwest of Santa Fe. The monument preserves unusual geologic features of cone-like tent rock formations, created by volcanic eruptions and subsequent erosion over millions of years. History:

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument was established in 2001, though its history dates back to an ancient period of volcanic activity. The area is located on the Pajarito Plateau, an area of volcanism that dates to more than 6 million years ago. Around 7,000 years ago, the Jemez Volcanic field ejected ash and pumice into the atmosphere, forming the striking landscape now seen in the area. The tent rocks were formed by the gradual erosion of volcanic ash deposits that were scattered by the wind. The monument is home to many diverse plants and animals, as well as ancient Pueblo ruins. The monument is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and has a variety of outdoor activities and scenic areas. In addition to its geological importance, it is one of the most photographed areas of New Mexico.
