History:

Jiayuguan is one of the most important cultural relics of ancient China, located in the west of the Great Wall and the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Its historical record can be traced back to at least 575 AD. During the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD), it was known as "Baishangguan" (White Hill Pass). Since the founding of the Great Wall in the 7th century, Jiayuguan has been an important pass of the northwestern line of defense. In the Ming Dynasty, its name was changed to "Jiayuguan", meaning "Satisfied Valley Pass". During the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), its name was changed to "Dachaoping", as it was the first place of China on the Silk Road. From the 14th century onwards, Jiayuguan was an important strategic location. During the Ming Dynasty, it guarded against the incursions of the Mongols and the northern nomadic peoples. During the Qing Dynasty, it was the major point of defense against the armies of the Dzungars who had invaded from the north. Jiayuguan played an important role in the historical development of Northwestern China. In the early 1900s, it was where the Qing Dynasty government signed the unequal "Boxer Protocol" with the Eight-Power Allied Forces. In 1949, it was the last site of the Japanese army to surrender to the People’s Liberation Army and the Chinese Communist Party. Jiayuguan had the highest military importance and was continually expanded and fortified. Today, the city is an important tourist destination in Northwest China, and the site of the Jiayuguan Pass is now a National Cultural Relic Protection Unit. There is also a museum dedicated to the pass, which displays over 2000 cultural artifacts and is a key site for learning about the history of China’s great wall and the military adversities faced in times gone by.
