Istituto Suore Carmelitane is an Italian religious order of the Catholic Church which was founded in 1855 in Sicily. It is a congregation of cloistered nuns with a strong emphasis on prayer and contemplative life. The order follows the Rule of St. Teresa of Ávila and is especially devoted to serving the needy. It is one of the oldest and most traditional cloistered orders of nuns in Italy. The order has many works of charity and assistance to the poor, aged and infirm, as well as promoting a life of prayer and contemplation and providing religious education to women. Istituto Suore Carmelitane also runs retreats, houses of formation for those aspiring to join the order, and houses of spirituality. The order is extremely dedicated to maintaining its cloistered tradition and taking part in the renewal of the Church’s monastic traditions.
