History:

Huchuy Qosqo ("little Cusco" in Quechua) is an archaeological site and the ruins of an Incan city near the town of Cusco, Peru. It is located 8 kilometers (5 miles) northeast of Cusco city and held a place of high political and religious importance in Incan times. The site was likely founded in the late 13th century and became an important administrative, ceremonial, and defensive outpost for the Incan Empire. It is believed to have been used as an important place for the Incas to pay tribute to their ancestors and gods, and was the key location in several battles during the Spanish Conquest. Huchuy Qosqo was discovered by the famous archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1912 and is believed to have been significantly occupied by the Inca until the Spanish conquest in 1533. The site is comprised of around 150 structures, including large and small plazas, archaeologically and geologically significant rock formations, terraces, ramps, and a segment of an Inca road system known as Qapaq Ñan. Huchuy Qosqo was the scene of several scenes of evolution during the Spanish Conquest, with the most notorious event being a missile attack led by the Spanish in 1536 which destroyed most of the structures. Today, Huchuy Qosqo is a popular tourist destination and a protected archaeological area.
