History:
Huaca El Loro is an archaeological site located in the city of Trujillo, Peru, in the La Libertad Region. It is a large pre-Columbian adobe pyramid dating back to the Moche period (AD 200-700). It is a double-walled building, with the inner core consisting of two structures: a wide sunken courtyard, and a stepped platform. It is surrounded by segments of decorated walls and towers. Huaca El Loro was first discovered during the 300-year Spanish colonial era of Peru (1529-1821). The site was explored by the 17th century antiquarians P. M. Pino and J. Paisano. In the 19th century, the site was studied by German-born Peruvian explorer Frederico Kauffmann Doig. Doig’s work and study of Huaca El Loro revealed a Moche temple and cemetery nearby, as well as a series of subterranean passages beneath the pyramid. In addition to Doig’s discoveries, the site has yielded ceramic objects, textiles, and human remains, suggesting that the site functioned as a burial ground and religious centre.
